Loading a dumpster well is not just tidiness. Pack it the right way and you fit more in, keep it safe to haul, and avoid the kind of overloaded or overweight bin that leads to an extra trip charge. Load it badly and you can run out of room at half capacity, or end up with a bin the truck cannot safely take. Here is how to load an Ottawa rental bin properly, from the first item to the fill line.
Where should you start loading?
Start with the heaviest, flattest items on the floor of the bin. Things like old boards, plywood, drywall sheets, and furniture pieces laid flat give you a stable base and spread the weight evenly across the bottom. Build up from there. Putting a solid base down first stops everything above it from shifting and keeps the load level, which matters a lot for safe pickup.
Work your bulky items in next, then use smaller debris to fill the gaps around and between them. Think of it like packing a moving truck rather than tossing things in at random.
How do you keep the weight balanced?
Spread the weight across the whole floor of the bin, not piled at one end or one side. A load that is heavy on one side is harder and less safe to lift onto the truck, and it can shift during transport. A few simple rules:
- Keep heavy material low and spread out across the base.
- Do not build a tall pile at one end while the other end sits empty.
- Put lighter material on top of heavier material, never the reverse.
- Step back now and then and check the load looks even from each side.
How do you fit more into the bin?
Most people waste space without realizing it. To get the most out of the bin you are paying for:
- Break things down. Snap down cardboard boxes, take apart furniture, and cut long boards to length. Smaller pieces pack tighter and leave fewer air pockets.
- Fill the gaps. Slot small debris, offcuts, and bagged material into the spaces between big items instead of leaving voids.
- Load in layers. Build the bin up in flat, even layers rather than one growing mountain in the middle.
- Lay long items flat. Boards, trim, and poles lie flat along the floor, not propped diagonally where they block everything above.
Our lower-profile 8-yard bin sits just about 3 feet high, so its lower walls make this kind of layered, deliberate loading much easier than reaching up over a tall bin.
What is the fill line, and why can't you load above it?
Keep everything level with the top of the bin walls. Do not heap material in a dome above the rim. An overfilled bin is unsafe to transport, loose debris can fall out on the road, and it cannot be legally hauled until it is brought back down to level. On the Base Bins fee schedule, an extra trip charge of $120 applies if a bin is overloaded, overweight, inaccessible, or needs to be relocated, so loading level and within limits is the simplest way to keep your bill predictable.
Leave the load flat enough that nothing is sticking up past the sides. If it is piled higher than the walls when the driver arrives, you may be asked to pull some out before it can be taken.
Why does heavy material fill the weight limit so fast?
Dense material is all about weight, not volume. Concrete, brick, dirt, asphalt, and wet or heavy debris can reach the weight the truck can safely carry while the bin still looks only part full. That is normal. At Base Bins, disposal is billed by the actual scale weight of your load at $145 per ton, passed through at cost with the weight documentation, so a heavy load costs more to dispose of even if it does not fill the space.
If your project is mostly concrete, brick, or dirt, do not try to fill a large bin with it. Keep heavy material in a smaller bin, loaded low and level, and ask about our clean fill option for concrete and inert material. Our clean fill guide explains how heavy loads are best handled.
What should you keep out of the bin?
Some items cannot go in a bin at all, and loading them anyway can mean re-handling and added fees. Hazardous materials, propane tanks, batteries, and similar items need separate routing. A few items such as appliances with refrigerant, mattresses, and tires are handled under special waste rules. Before you start loading, check our allowed waste page and our guide on what can't go in a dumpster so nothing ends up in the bin that should not be there.
Quick loading do's and don'ts
- Do put heavy, flat items down first as a base.
- Do break items down and fill the gaps.
- Do keep the load level with the walls.
- Do spread heavy material across the floor.
- Don't pile material above the fill line.
- Don't load all the weight into one end or one side.
- Don't put prohibited or special-waste items in without checking first.
- Don't overfill a bin with concrete or dirt. Heavy material belongs in a smaller, level load.
How Base Bins makes loading easier
- Low-profile bins. The 8-yard bin is about 3 feet high with lower walls, so you are lifting debris in rather than over your head.
- Driveway-friendly sizing. Our bins fit most Ottawa driveways, including narrow lots and shared driveways, so the bin sits close to where you are working.
- Placement requests. Our drivers are experienced with tight driveways and access points, and you can tell us your placement preferences when you schedule.
- Honest, weight-based disposal. You pay the actual scale weight at $145 per ton, passed through at cost, with no bundled markup.
- Pick the right size. Not sure how big to go? See our bin size guide so you are not paying for space you cannot use.
- Fully insured. $2M liability coverage and WSIB compliant.
Bottom line
Good loading comes down to a few habits: heavy and flat on the bottom, weight spread evenly, gaps filled, everything level with the walls, and nothing in the bin that does not belong there. Do that and you fit more in, avoid the overloaded or overweight extra trip charge, and keep your disposal cost in line with what you actually threw away.
